POLE BENDING

The youth pole bending finals was an adventure in no times and downed poles. When Ceri McCaffery and Smooth San took their turn 12th in the go, there were three no times and a lot of poles on the ground. Tobi West from Georgia and Lady Rum Runner had the lead with a cumulative finals and prelims time of 42.200 seconds. They would end the competition in 4th place. Ceri and Smooth San delivered a blistering clean 19.775 for a cumulative 40.650 and the world championship. This is the first trip to a Ford AQHYA World Championship Show for the 16-year-old and her 12 year old chestnut gelding. Ceri regularly competes on the high school rodeo circuit and just competed in the High School Rodeo Finals prior to this event.

J.D. Holland of Bucyrus, Kansas, and Rellas Fox marked a 220.5 in the heeling prelims, putting them in fourth place as they came into the heeling finals later that evening. Last in the draw of 15, J.D. and Rellas Fox broke from the box and quickly heeled their steer with the help of AQHA Professional Horseman Brad Lund. Marking a 223.5, it was the second Youth World championship for J.D., who won heeling in 2007 with his other horse, Pat Rat Jack. To add icing to the cake, J.D. added the reserve championship with his previous world champion horse.

Tyler O’Neal finally got his chance to step into the coliseum on the morning of the final day of the 2008 Youth World Championship Show. Tyler led his 2-year-old gelding, Won And Only Fella, through a lineup of 16 horses and walked out of the arena at the head of the line with a gold trophy in one hand and lead in the other.

Seventeen-year-old Darcy Reeve piloted the talented A Certain Vino to the youth world championship in western pleasure on August 9 at the Ford AQHYA World Championship Show. Bred by Tim and Lou Petty of Ocala, Florida, the 2003 gelding’s first big splash on the horse show scene was his win in the 2005 Equine Sports Medicine Challenge at the Reichert Celebration. His titles since include the junior western pleasure world championship in 2007. Darcy herself is a seasoned campaigner in trail and western pleasure.
