General Membership Meeting
January 19, 2008
The meeting was called to order at 1:06pm. By President Jeff Mellott.
Minutes from the 2007 meeting were read by the secretary Sandy Bryant Parker. It was moved to accept the minutes as read by Diana Friend and seconded by Jessica Streit. Motion carried.
Sandy Bryant Parker reported on the financial situation giving check account balances and CD balances. The open association had a balance of $15,810.75 in the checking and a CD in the amount of $18,193.75. The amateur association has a balance of $10,203.40 in checking and a CD of $4,813.09. These balances were as of 1/1/2008.
Peggy Pickford reported on the newsletter financial situation. The board has amended it’s previous decision to charge $5.00 to keep receiving the newsletter and the newsletter will be sent throughout 2008 at no charge. All Lifetime members will receive the newsletter for freeup to including lifefime memberships purchased thru 2008. Peggy Pickford has offered to forego her 2008 salary to make the newsletter break even.
President Jeff Mellott gave a report on the Youth scholarship as prepared by Stan O’Neil. A gentleman by the name of Robert Young (deceased) has named the Youth scholarship fund as a beneficiary for his estate. The estate is worth around a half million dollars and KQHA is one of 3 beneficiaries. It has not yet been decided how the moneys will be distributed. The total in the fund is $46,370.00. Income for the account for 2007 came from: the Tipton Trail Ride $99.25, Gary & Sandy Zwick $150.00, 81-40 Riding Club, $500.00, and the Keener Fund final payment of $1202.75. Payments were made in the following amounts: Scholarships of $2,325.91 with $1,325.91 going to Shannon Smith and $1,000 going to Jolie Van Petten.
Election of Board Members. Shannon Justice and Julie Voge have both resigned from the board. Pr4esident Jeff Mellott appointed Garth Gardiner and Shelly McColm to fill those two positions. There is one position open due to Jeff retiring as President .. Nominations from the board include Cindy Sundgren, Sheryl Strathman and Jenny Bormann. Roberta moved to close nominations, Diana Friend seconded. Motion carried. Nominees were introduced and voting ensued.
While votes were being tallied the Kansas Kounts Awards were given.
The new board member was announced as Jenny Bormann.
Year end awards for members A-I were presented.
Next the proposed amendment to the By-Laws was discussed. Board member Diana Friend reported on what the current By-Laws read, and then read the proposed amendment to the By-Laws which has been published in two issues of the newsletter. Discussion followed. Voting took place by a show of hands. Motion carried to adopt the new amendment.
Committee reports:
Amateur – The amateur report was given by Leslie Woolley. New board members and officers were announced. John Rose becomes the past president. Leslie Woolley takes over as president, Debra Powers will be vice president, Kathy Green as secretary. New board members include: Sue Nickel, Mary Mages, Dia Weisenberger, Kathryn James and John Rose. A new amateur show as been approved to be held May 15 – 18 in Wichita at the coliseum. The June show will still take place but under new management.
Youth – Sandy Zwick reported on the youth. New officers: president is Chandry Kraft, vice-president is Mariah Moxley, public relations will be Sydney Doane and the secretary is Paris Nottingham. The youth board of directors for 2007 will be Cassie Collins, Ariel Smith, Levi Allison, Maddie Vosburgh and Katie Ralph. The youth will once again sell permanent numbers for the 2008 year. The youth presented thank you awards to Sandy Zwick and Roberta Jaye for their work.
Awards – the awards committee report was given by Chuck Sperry. Awards were down this year and Chuck explained how the monetary amounts for awards were derived. Anyone unhappy with their awards was urged to join the committee for 2008.
Kansas Kounts –the report was given by Julie Voge. 23 people participated in the Kansas Kounts program in 2007. Peggy Pickford will take over Julies duties on the Kansas Kounts program. Peggy and the Capital City Quarter Horse show supplied the second place and on down awards in the Kansas Kounts program. The bulk of the sponsorship was again provided by Logan Western Supply who provided the 1 st place awards.
Sandy Bryant Parker reported on the show and contest committee thanking everyone for their hard work on the Fall show. The show netted almost $16,000.00. With the proceeds we were pleased to award $1,000 to Horses of Hope and $500 to Rosewood Ranch. Shelly McColm reported that a third group which is located by Kansas City is going to start showing in the EWD classes at the shows.
Media – Diana Friend discussed the Winners and Buyers Guide for 2008. She has set a goal of 5,000 copies for 2008. We netted $1,441.74 on the 2007 directory.
Futurity – The futurity committee was reported on by Craig Cole. The 2008 futurities will be similar to the format for 2007. They will once again be slot futurities. Jeff Mellott asked for input on the Purina Futurity. Jeff also made inquiries about creating a round robin futurity with Colorado and Nebraska.
Finance – Jeff Mellott visited about the trailer that was donated by the Lee Reeve family. The Reeve’s donated a new Blue Ribbon 2 horse all aluminum slant load trailer valued at $20,000. Tickets will be a donation of $10.00. Open tickets will give the association the full $10.00. Amateur and Youth tickets will award half of the money to the group selling the tickets, with the other half going to the open. Expenses will be split with ½ of the expenses going to the open and ¼ to the amateur and the youth. Kathryn James is in charge of the amateur, and Sandy Zwick will be in charge of the youth. Open will be handled by Sandy Parker.n Jeff asked that each person send a personal thank you to the Lee Reeve family. The address is in the directory. The ticket sales begin now and the drawing will be held at the fall futurity. If anyone wishes to take the trailer to an advertising revenue, contact Jeff, Sandy Parker or Sherri Tearney.
AIM Report – Diana Friend reported on the AIM report.
Recreational Riding – Ryan Cole reported on the recreational riding program.
Jeff asked for special recognition for Julie Voge, not only for her efforts for KQHA and Kansas Kounts but also in recognition of the fact that Julie was the coach of the World Champion judging team at the youth world show. Cassandra Collins was a part of that team and was introduced by Julie. Julie thanked all of the members of the youth team by name.
Diana asked everone to participate in the planned trivia night to take place after the banquet tonight. There are prizes!!!!
Year end awards were given for J-Z.
Jeff Mellott announced that he had sign up sheets for committees. Everyone was strongly urged to sign up for at least one committee.
