Kansas Members Score Big At Congress Hippology Contest

On October 17, 2007 KQHA was represented in the All American Congress Hippology contest held in Columbus, Ohio. Team members were Shannon Smith, Sarah Smith, Jason Miles and Austin Baragary. This contest was designed to test the knowledge and understanding of equine science and demonstrate practical application of that knowledge and skill. The contest consisted of the following sections and the results for the KQHA team are listed.
1. Examination - approximately 200 points.
This phase may include a written exam, slides to be identified as to breed, color, activity, appointments, etc., and internal and external anatomy including reproductive anatomy.

2, Stations - approximately 200 points.
Contestants may be asked to identify tack and equipment, feed samples and other horse related items. Contestants may be requested to demonstrate knowledge of the external anatomy of equine, skeletal anatomy, internal anatomy, disease, and the life cycles of internal parasites. Knowledge of breeds, breed history, color, color patterns and equine activities may be tested.

4. Team Problem - approximately 200 points (not included in the scores of individuals for determining individual rank). All teams will be presented with one or more problems to be addressed by the entire team. Problems may include impromptu answers or after time to prepare answers. Problems to be given might include: 1) Plan a specific youth participation activity, 2) Set-up an annual herd health program, 3) Design a stable of a given size for a specific number of horses, 4) Balance a ration for DE or TDN, CP, Ca and P for a specific type of horse, 5) Design a training program for a specific type of performance horse, or 6) Design a breeding and/or leasing contract - specific clauses for insurance, liability, payments, care, termination, transport, etc.
Overall Shannon Smith was the top placing individual
and the team representing the KQHA placed 2nd overall. Great job gang!!!!!!!!!!!
